Understanding Your Insurance Plan
If you’re new to insurance or are trying to better understand your plan, there are a few key terms to keep in mind to understand your insurance coverage. Usually, your insurance provider will explain all of these to you when you enroll in a plan.
However, here are some of the most important insurance terms to know.
Key Insurance Terms
- Deductible: This is the amount of money you will have to pay out of your own pocket each year before the insurance begins to cover. Usually, these reset yearly.
- Copayment: Your copay is often the set amount of money you will have to pay for a specific purpose.
- Premium: This is the monthly cost of your insurance plan that you pay.
- Coinsurance: This is usually the percentage you’ll pay out of pocket compared to what insurance will cover.
About Beacon Insurance
Originally called ValueOptions, Beacon Health Options is a primary behavioral health and mental health services insurance plan. Beacon Health Options merged in 2020 and became a child plan of the parent company Anthem Inc.
Beacon insurance is available for purchase and coverage in all 50 states. Currently, the Beacon insurance network covers around 40 million people and partners with around 65 different health insurance plans.
Beacon Health Insurance Plans
Depending on the state you live in, Beacon has varying offers for mental health and behavioral health coverage. Beacon may also partner with your current health insurance plan to provide additional coverage for substance use disorder treatment.
Generally, Beacon insurance covers the majority of costs for initial mental health assessments, detox, medication-assisted treatment, mental health therapy, residential treatment, and outpatient treatment program coverage.
Beacon is unique in that it also offers Telehealth mental services to subscribers. However, you will likely have more treatment options if you choose to do an in-person substance disorder treatment program.
Types of Beacon Plans
Beacon currently offers four tiers of plans, similar to many other insurance companies. Here are the Beacon plan offerings:
Beacon HMO
This plan is usually the cheapest with low monthly premiums and a high deductible. However, this plan has limits to who you can see, usually, only in-network provider treatment is covered. You may also be required to get all treatment referrals from a PCP.
Beacon POS
This plan is the next level above the HMO option, with slightly higher premiums and a slightly lower deductible. Here you may have limited out-of-network options, and may still be required to get a primary care physician referral.
Beacon PPO
This plan is more common but will have much higher premiums than the first two plans. You will likely have much greater freedom in choosing your treatment program, and will likely not need a referral.
Beacon EPO
This plan is the most expensive but will have a very small deductible with a full range of options between an in and out-of-network treatment team.
Beacon Substance Abuse Treatment
After the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2014, health insurance providers cannot deny coverage or charge additional premium fees for pre-existing conditions.
Due to the mental health care and substance abuse treatment services needed to treat addiction, health insurance companies are required to classify substance use disorder as a pre-existing condition.
Beacon Mental Health Treatment Coverage
Generally, your Beacon insurance policy will usually cover some combination of drug and alcohol addiction treatment, depending on your plan level:
- Detoxification services include medication assisted treatment and medication management
- Inpatient treatment or residential rehab
- Partial hospitalization programs
- Intensive outpatient treatment programs
- Sober living and other continuing care after-discharge options
- Dual diagnosis treatment for other mental health conditions in addition to substance abuse
